DERRICK OSAZE
Derrick ‘Del Boy’ Osaze has been noticed by boxing bosses.
The Midlands Area Council have told the 24 year old from Nottingham he’s in the running for their Prospect-of-the-Year award after winning his first five fights.
The winner will be announced at the awards night on Saturday, October 6, when Osaze has his next fight, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on promoter Mickey Helliet’s ‘Judgement Day’ show.
“It was a nice surprise to find out I had been put forward,” he said.
“I’m keeping my feet on the ground, but it’s nice to be recognised by the people at the top.”
Osaze revealed he’s missed out on a shot at the vacant Midlands Area super-middleweight championship.
Boxing bosses paired him with Corey Jackson, but Osaze said: “They didn’t want the fight – and that’s maybe not a bad thing.
“I don’t really see myself as a super-middleweight and it’s still early in my career.
“If the fight had been offered, it would have been hard to say: ‘No,’ but I’ve got time to climb the rankings and work my way towards a title fight.”
Barrington Brown-trained Osaze realises he has much to learn following his points win over Harry Matthews in July.
He said: “I gave myself a seven out of 10, but I should have taken my time a bit more.
“I had him staggering in the second round, but then I rushed my work and missed my opportunity.
“I should have thrown fewer shots – and put more power into them.
“We’ve been working on that in the gym.
“I’ve been facing durable opponents who don’t get stopped, but the stoppages will come when I stop rushing my work.”
